# What AI visibility is and how to measure it

*AEO, GEO · The Litebox team · Last updated: September, 2026 · 4 min read*

AI visibility is whether your brand shows up when people ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google's AI Overviews a question your business could answer. It is not the same as ranking on Google. A page can rank well in traditional search and still be invisible to an AI model, or the reverse.

## Key facts

- AI visibility covers mentions, citations, and paraphrases across AI assistants and AI-generated search summaries, not just links in a results page.
- A handful of free checkers can give a one-time snapshot, but none of them track visibility over time on their own.
- Showing up once does not mean showing up consistently. The same query can return different results depending on phrasing and timing.
- Measuring AI visibility well means combining a snapshot check with a repeatable method, not relying on a single tool's score.

This builds on the same structural principles covered in [How to structure a page so AI engines cite it](https://litebox.ai/blog/answer-engine-optimization-website-structure-h1), which lays out what makes a page citable in the first place.

## The tools that check AI visibility today

Several free and paid tools have emerged to check whether a brand shows up in AI answers. Here is what the current landscape looks like:

| Tool | What it checks | What it doesn't show you / limitations |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Amplitude (Free AI Visibility Report) | Checks brand visibility across major AI platforms, including ChatGPT and Google AI Overview. The report includes a visibility score, sentiment, competitive rankings, topics, related prompts, and recommendations. | The free report is designed as an entry point to Amplitude's broader AI Visibility product. Ongoing measurement and deeper analysis are part of the full platform rather than the standalone free report. |
| Ahrefs (Free AI Visibility Checker) | Checks brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, and Google AI Mode. It shows total mentions, mentions by platform, top topics, cited domains, and cited pages. | The free checker provides a limited preview, with only the top five results in each section. It does not provide historical tracking or the full competitive and custom-prompt data available in Brand Radar. |
| SE Ranking | Checks AI visibility across AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. Its free checker shows visibility scores, brand mentions, linked mentions, and competitor comparisons. | The free checker is a limited snapshot. Historical data, deeper prompt analysis, source data, and ongoing monitoring require the paid AI visibility tracking tools. |
| WP Engine | Provides educational guidance on AI visibility and publishes a comparison of AI visibility tracking tools, including Conductor, LLMclicks.ai, Otterly.ai, and Profound. | WP Engine's content is not itself an AI visibility checker. It does not provide a free brand visibility score or direct monitoring tool comparable to the other entries in this table. |
| aivisibility.io | Audits how ChatGPT describes a SaaS brand, including whether it is mentioned, which competitors appear instead, inaccuracies in AI descriptions, citation-related issues, and structural or content gaps. It also provides a 0–100 visibility score. | The audit focuses specifically on ChatGPT and SaaS buyer-intent queries rather than providing broad multi-platform coverage. Its results are therefore not directly comparable with tools that monitor several AI engines. |

## What free checkers don't show you

Most free tools give a single snapshot: run a query, see whether a brand comes up, done. That is useful as a starting point, but it misses two things that matter more over time.

The first is consistency. A brand can show up once and disappear the next week if a model's retrieval or training shifts. A single check cannot tell you whether a result is stable.

The second is context. A generic checker cannot tell you why a competitor is showing up instead of you, or which specific page on your site would need to change to fix that. It gives a score, not a path to improve it.

## FAQ

### Is AI visibility the same as SEO?

No. SEO is about ranking in traditional search results. AI visibility is about whether an AI model mentions, cites, or paraphrases your brand when answering a question, which depends on different signals.

### Can a small business have good AI visibility?

Yes. AI visibility depends more on how clearly a page answers a question than on domain size, though established brands still have an advantage in some cases.

### Do AI visibility scores from different tools agree with each other?

Not always. Different tools query different models and different prompt sets, so the same brand can get different scores depending on which tool is used.

A free checker is a reasonable place to start, but it will not tell you whether your visibility is stable or how to improve it. That combination of monitoring and a clear path forward is what [our AEO service](https://litebox.ai/services/growth) is built to provide.
